Matthew  "Travis"  Townes 

I am a Global Studies major with a minor in Journalism and will graduate from MTSU in December 2019. I attended Auburn University for my first two years of college then decided I wanted to move back to Tennessee. I enrolled at MTSU as soon as I came back to the Middle Tennessee area and began working at Twin Creeks Marina. I am currently  the Marina Manager. Throughout my life I have developed a passion for the environment and the people that inhabit it which has lead me to receiving a degree in Global Studies and a successful career in the Leisure and Tourism Industry/Recreation. 

 In 2018 I joined Twin Creeks Marina & Resort LLC while finishing my Bachelors degree

(Received December 2019).

I rose quickly within the corporate structure and was promoted to Marina Manager at Twin Creeks Marina & Resort in October of 2019.

In 2020 I began to manage other aspects of the Resort  when Twin Creeks RV Park LP (2020) and Twin Creeks Rentals LLC (2021) began operations.

In 2021 I began fulfilling the duties of General Manager, working directly with ownership to accomplish goals of all sizes while maintaining daily operations.

Amongst the multi-faceted duties of a Marina/Resort Manager, technological operations/implementation are #1 to perpetuate operational improvements.

Whether it be a new booking software, complicated restaurant audio setup, WIFI mesh networks, security camera installations/infrastructure, short term rental management systems like Point Central, or even employee scheduling, I love seeing operations improve consistently by utilizing the tools that software and other new technologies provide us with.

Implementing a short term rental management system  by combining my IT and manual labor skills, is when my passion for multifaceted business operations developed as a General Manager. 

 

In 2018 my employers/mentors had me begin taking part in the company financial meetings. Since then I have excelled at creating/analyzing annual budgets and forecasts. I excel and enjoy finding ways to cut expenses or increase revenue streams without negatively affecting the customer experience.

I also enjoy and have worked directly with dock manufacturers and install crews  to bring new slip additions to life physically and digitally on misc marina management platforms.

 

Being in Marina Managment through 2019-2022 has been challenging yet rewarding. I have been very lucky to see the explosion in the recreational boating industry as well as how supply chain issues and material flows can make or break a seasons bottom line. 

 Whether it be the availability of pontoon boats from dealerships across the nation, or the price and availability of aluminum, sail shades, or something as simple as a towable or engine oil......inventory management (in the ship store and for rental boat maintenance) has been a challenge that has required and developed my creativity

 

I have also managed and maintained a rental boat operation that started with 10 boats in 2018 using a paper and pen management binder. Within 3 years,  we (my leadership team and I)  successfully operated 28 pontoons in the 2021 rental boat fleet. I also have a background managing an RV resort and boutique short term rentals simultaneously as the aforementioned.

    I worked for a restaurant on Tims Ford lake, as a dishwasher who made alcoholic beverages on an industrial scale for frozen drink machines. I also stocked beer and soft drinks in the convenience section of the Marina. If it was necessary I would also help out in the kitchen with food prep.
